Razing of approximately 70% of the Malcolm Price Laboratory School building was approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa on December 5, 2012. The process of that razing has begun and is scheduled to be completed by August 31, 2013. The Nielsen Fieldhouse and attached wing will remain. A portion of the remaining area has already been remodeled and the Child Development Center has relocated there. In addition, work is progressing on moving the children's center related to Communication Sciences and Disorders, which is partially supported by grant funding from an outside organization.
The entire site will be re-graded, which involves significant fill to bring the lot up to the sidewalk area at the edges with a more pleasing slope back to the parking lot and back area of the Nielsen Fieldhouse. Some of the backfill will be up to an additional three feet compared to the current land. The current plan is for a predominately expansive lawn to serve as park-like recreation space for the children in the Child Development Center as well as college students living on that part of the campus.
Items which are being retained for future use include: The lintel above the front door which has the name of the school, cornerstone, potential time capsule contents at the cornerstone, granite by the entrances, the aluminum letters from the outside of the building, flagpole, bike racks, some light poles and fixtures, and stones of character. Some memorial trees have been harvested for replanting. In addition, select trophies, awards, and banners have been retained and are in storage.
Approximately 1,000 full or partial bricks are available outside the southeast side of the construction fence. These bricks are available to the public at no cost on a first come first served basis with a limit of on per person. In addition, approximately 500 bricks will be provided to the Ross A. Nielsen (RAN) Board.
